The Etniker project designed by José Miguel de Barandiaran first and foremost sought to be the systematic recording of the cultural facts that make up the life of a place; secondly, the idea was to summarise the material obtained in the different parts of the Basque Country in a cultural atlas. A strategy was therefore implemented and structured as follows:

*El conocimiento de la lengua Knowledge of the local y su variante dialectal facilitan el acercamiento a los informantes y la interpretación de los datos recopiladoslanguage and its dialect would make it easier to approach the people interviewed and interpret the data gathered.
*La información recogida alcanza hasta donde llega la memoria de los informantesThe information gathered would go back as far as the memory of the people surveyed, como mucho un par de generaciones anterioresno further than a couple of generations earlier. Se consignan además las transformaciones y la situación en el momento de realizar la encuestaThe changes and the situation at the time of survey would also be noted.
*En las reuniones territoriales se analizan los datos obtenidos entre los distintos miembros para contrastarlos y comprobar que el enfoque sea el correctoDuring the territorial meetings, the different members analysed the data obtained to compare them and check that the approach was correct.
Barandiaran redactó para el proyecto Etniker un cuestionario que tenía en cuenta las recomendaciones formuladas en los foros de etnología europeos con el nombre de prepared a questionnaire, entitled a ''Guía para una encuesta etnográficaGuide for an Ethnographic Survey,'' y este es el cuestionario que utilizan todos los miembros de los Grupos for the Etniker project and which took into account the recommendations made in the European ethnology forums. That questionnaire has b een used by all the members of the Etniker'' ''para la realización de las distintas campañas de investigación del Group to conduct the different research campaigns of the Atlas. Está compuesto por It consisted of 840 preguntas agrupadas por temasquestions arranged in themes.
