Like the other contributions planned for the Ethnographical Atlas, all six books published to date take a detailed look at different aspects of life in Vasconia. The work as a whole is designed to study traditional culture as recorded in the 20th century and the changes affecting it in that period.

La investigación de campo se ha llevado a cabo en el territorio de Fieldwork was carried out in Vasconia, situado en el Occidente de Europa, que ocupa un área que se extiende entre los ríos a region of Western Europe straddling the French and Spanish Pyrenees between the river Adour al Norte y to the north and the Ebro al Surto the south. Está integrado por dos administraciones políticas englobadas en el Estado Español Two administrations in the area are part of the Spanish state system (Comunidad Autónoma del País Vasco y Comunidad Foral de the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country and the neighbouring Charter Community of Navarra) y una parte del departamento francés de and the other is part of the French Pyrénées Atlantiques''département''. El conjunto suma una superficie de Measuring some 20.,531 km^{square kilometres, Vasconia has a population of 2} y cuenta con una población de 2.,900.,728 habitantes (censo the 1999 para census for French Vasconia continental y and the 2001 para census for Spanish Vasconia peninsular).

El trabajo de campo se ha realizado en 79 localidades distribuidas por Álava, Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa, Iparralde (Labourd, Basse-Navarre, Soule) y Navarra. Para la selección de las poblaciones se ha atendido a la diversidad regional del territorio objeto de estudio así como a la de las zonas (rural, urbana y costera) donde se ha efectuado. El cuestionario etnográfico utilizado figura en la ''Guía para una encuesta etnográfica'' (Cap. II. Usos del Grupo Doméstico) y específicamente en las preguntas que hacen referencia a los juegos infantiles (cuestiones II.30 a II.45).
