The early work on the Ethnographic Atlas of the Basque Country required research teams, known as Etniker, to be set up and distributed throughout Euskal Herria. Barandiaran himself took charge of organising them in the different provinces in the early 1970s.

*Etniker-Gipuzkoa: Desde 1954 Barandiaran venía dirigiendo en San Sebastián un Seminario de Etnología al amparo de la Sociedad de Ciencias Naturales Aranzadi. En 1972 comenzaron los primeros intentos para formar un grupo de trabajo para el proyecto Etniker. Este grupo como Etniker Gipuzkoa se formalizó en Ataun en 1974.
