Many homesteads in the rural districts are no longer involved in farming. The districts have undergone a progressive “urbanisation” process and the homesteads have often been refurbished using urban criteria to the point that a curious convergence process has occurred between the rural inhabitants who aspire to have a house with the “amenities” of a town house, and the new arrivals to the city who build one as near as possible to their ideal of what a rural house would be; the outcome is that both types of house are suspiciously similar<ref>An earlier volumen of this Atlas on home and family in the Basque Country considers these changes.</ref>.
Los cambios acontecidos en los cultivos a lo largo del siglo XX han acarreado modificaciones del paisaje a todos los niveles, llegando a producir incluso una pérdida cromática en la vertiente atlántica, donde el verde tradicional estaba salpicado por el dorado de los cereales en sazón, el azul del lino florecido, el amarillo de los nabos al final del invierno o los variados colores otoñales del arbolado autóctono, transformándose hoy en la monótona uniformidad de las plantaciones de pino insignis, con su verde oscuro, o el verde más deslavado de los eucaliptales que dominan el paisaje de amplias superficies de Bizkaia y Gipuzkoa, reflejo del fracaso de la actividad agrícola y ganadera.
